What is Batch Management in SAP?
BATCH : A batch is a quantity of material
that is grouped together for various reasons. It is often determined that the
materials have the same characteristics and values. All the materials (in house or external) are
identifies through batch during goods receipt and goods issue.
For
instance, in the chemical industry, a certain number of containers of a certain
product may be considered a batch because they were produced at the same time and
have the same physical and chemical characteristics. These characteristics may differ
from those of another batch of material produced on the same day.
The
pharmaceutical industry is one sector where material batches are extremely important.
Each batch of material is recorded throughout the product and distribution
process. In the case of product recall, the batch number stamped on the pack or
bottle of material is the identification that is needed.
Batch
management is applicable for FMCG (Fast moving consumer goods) materials. Here
we can split the production or procurement quantities in to number of batches
based on the date and time of production.
Batch
will be useful to identify the correct materials and if there is any failure of
materials we can able to identify the root cause by drill down batches
Batch Management can be used in all industries. It is mainly used in the
following -
- Chemicals
- Pharmaceuticals
- Cosmetics
- Health Care
- Foodstuffs
- Retail
- Aerospace
- Mill Products
- Mining
Why we have to maintain Batch Management?
There are various reasons for this:
- Legal requirements (for example, the guidelines set out by GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) or regulations on hazardous material
- Defect tracing, callback activities, and regression requirement
- The need for differentiated quantity-and value-based Inventory Management (for example, due to heterogeneous yield/result qualities or varying constituents in Production.
- Differences in usage and the monitoring thereof in materials planning in SD and Production.
- Production or procedural requirements (for example, settlement of material quantities on the basis of different batch specifications).
Batch Management
incorporates the entire logistics process, from procurement to sales. The new
functionality works with all existing batch records. It is closely
linked with classification, but can also be used without classification
To understand how
important batch recording has become, consider the regulations within the
European Union. The EU requires that each batch of pharmaceutical material
imported into the EU must be accompanied by a batch certificate. This must
contain the testing specifications of the product, analytical methods and test results,
statements that indicate that it conforms to current Good Manufacturing Procedures
(cGMP), and sign-off by a company official.
